Fix weak cell signal. Start with the real cause.

How it works

Three steps to the right fix

Step 1

Measure

Take a dBm reading indoors and outside, at the spot an antenna could mount.

Step 2

Diagnose

Find out if the problem is the building, the carrier, signal quality or distance.

Step 3

Fix

Choose the cheapest fix that solves it. Often that isn’t a booster.

Straight talk

When a booster is the wrong answer

Most booster sites exist to sell you one. Here are three cases where you should keep your money.

Nothing usable outside

Below about -115 dBm outdoors, a booster has almost nothing to amplify.

Strong signal, bad service

If the reading is strong, the problem is usually quality or congestion.

Solid home internet

Free Wi-Fi calling may fix indoor calls and texts on its own.

If a booster is the right fix

Why it can be worth buying

One-time cost

Basic home kits start around $200. What boosters cost

No monthly fee

A booster is hardware. Your carrier plan stays the same.

Every phone benefits

One wideband booster can serve several carriers at once. How that works

Room to back out

weBoost, HiBoost and SignalBoosters.com advertise 30-day returns and 2 to 3 year warranties. Confirm the terms before you buy.

Six checks before you buy

Who’s behind this

Started in a freezing Buffalo driveway

In 2018, Arif Hossain was standing outside in the cold to catch one bar of 4G. The help he found online was either engineering manuals or shallow review pages.

Today he’s a telecommunications network technician who has mapped, installed and optimized hundreds of boosters for homes, RVs and commercial buildings. This site is the plain-English guide he wanted back then.

Questions

Signal booster basics

Yes, when there is usable signal outside to amplify. A booster brings that signal indoors. It cannot create signal, so measure your outdoor dBm first.

Yes, if it is FCC-certified and you register it with your carrier before use. Registration is free. The rule is 47 CFR 20.21.

Many consumer boosters cover the major US carriers, but band support varies by model. Check the bands listed for the exact booster before you buy.

Less than the box says in most homes. The rated figure assumes strong outdoor signal and one open floor. Weak outdoor signal, thick walls and extra floors all reduce it.

On 4G and 5G, about -89 dBm or stronger is excellent and -90 to -104 is good. Reception gets difficult from around -105, and below -115 dBm is close to a dead zone. These bands are conventions, not official standards.
