Signal boosters are regulated devices

This is the part most buyers do not realize, and it matters more than any product review on this site.

A cell signal booster is not a neutral gadget. It transmits on licensed spectrum that belongs to your wireless carrier, and a badly configured one can degrade service for your neighbors and interfere with the cell site itself. That is why boosters are regulated.

Under current FCC rules, consumer signal boosters sold and operated in the United States must be FCC-certified, and you are generally required to register the booster with your wireless carrier and have their consent to operate it. The major carriers provide this registration free of charge. You are also expected to operate the unit according to its labeling and instructions, and to shut it down if your carrier or the FCC tells you it is causing interference.

These rules change, and the details depend on your device, your carrier, and whether your installation is residential or commercial. Nothing on this site should be treated as a statement of your legal obligations. Verify current requirements directly with:

  • The FCC at fcc.gov — the authority on certification and consumer booster rules.
  • Your wireless carrier — for registration and consent, which is theirs to grant, not ours.

If a seller cannot tell you whether a booster is FCC-certified, treat that as your answer. Uncertified equipment can be illegal to operate and can put the responsibility for any interference on you.

Outside the United States, the rules are different and often stricter. Some countries require approval from the network operator; others prohibit consumer boosters outright. If you are not in the US, check with your national regulator and your operator before buying anything.

Commercial and larger installations

Guidance on this site is aimed at consumer and small-scale installations. Larger commercial buildings, multi-tenant properties, and public-safety applications fall under different rules and different equipment classes, frequently require a professional installer, and may involve building-code or fire-code obligations. If that describes your project, engage a qualified installer rather than following a consumer guide.

Do not rely on a booster for emergency calls

Never depend on a signal booster to make a 911 or other emergency call. A booster is powered equipment with an amplifier, cabling, and antennas — it can fail, lose power, be knocked out of alignment, or be shut down by your carrier. Always maintain a reliable way to reach emergency services that does not depend on it, such as a landline, satellite messenger, or a location with known native coverage.

No booster is guaranteed to fix your problem

A signal booster amplifies signal that already exists. It does not create coverage.

If there is no usable signal at your donor antenna location, no amount of money spent on equipment will manufacture one. Results depend on factors specific to you and outside anyone’s control from a distance:

  • the strength and quality of the outside signal at your property
  • your distance from, and line of sight to, the serving tower
  • your building’s construction — metal roofing, foil-backed insulation, stucco with wire lath, concrete, and low-E glass all attenuate signal heavily
  • antenna type, placement, separation, and cable runs
  • your carrier and the specific frequency bands in use in your area
  • local terrain, tree cover, and nearby structures

They are illustrative, not a prediction of what you will get. Nothing on this site promises a particular signal improvement, speed, coverage area, or number of bars.

Installation safety

Installing a booster commonly involves working at height, drilling through your building’s exterior, and running cable — none of which are risk-free.

  • Roof and ladder work causes serious injuries every year. If you are not confident and properly equipped for work at height, hire someone who is.
  • An outdoor antenna and its cabling introduce lightning and grounding considerations. Grounding requirements are governed by electrical code and are not optional. If there is any doubt, use a licensed electrician or a professional installer.
  • Drilling into a structure can hit wiring, plumbing, or structural members, and may affect your roof warranty or your building envelope. Know what is behind the surface before you make a hole.
  • If you rent, or your property is governed by an HOA or a lease, get permission in writing before mounting anything to the building.
